Sex Roles: A Journal of Research, v44 n1-2 p1-15 Jan. Investigated the possible existence of a gender similarity bias in evaluations of gender discrimination allegations, using a laboratory experiment in which the strength of evidence against a defendant company and the gender of the plaintiff were manipulated. Participants were ethnically diverse undergraduate students. Although female mock jurors did not rule to the disadvantage of male plaintiffs, they tended to favor female plaintiffs. (SM)…

Eisinger, Peter K. (1979). Black Mayors and the Politics of Racial Economic Advancement. An analysis of personnel policies and city purchasing and contracting patterns in cities governed by black mayors suggests that the black mayors have adapted modern techniques of public administration to serve traditional ethnic income goals once pursued by urban machines. By guaranteeing the increased participation of blacks in municipal civil service jobs and in city purchasing, the black mayors are making city government a significant focus for the redistribution of income. The implications of this analysis, which examines data on the increase in black participation in these areas in six large cities, are (1) that the capture of city hall by blacks can have important economic consequences for the black community; (2) that the politics of ethnic (or racial) advancement once practiced by traditional machines is possible even under the rationalized techniques of modern public administration. (1971). Report of the Special Committee on the Status of Women at UCSC. The status of women at the University of California-Santa Clara is indicated in reference to faculty numbers, rank, administration, regularization of nonladder appointments, tenure, merit increases, and termination. Recommendations suggest: (1) UCSC should strive to achieve in its ladder ranks a percentage of women equal to that of women who received Ph.D.'s from the 10 leading universities between 1962-1967, that is 12% (2) UCSC should give high priority to correcting the imbalance existing in administration and policymaking positions; (3) Boards of studies and colleges should review their recruitment procedures; (4) UCSC should not neglect minority needs; (5) any faculty should be entitled to unpaid maternity leave of two quarters; (6) any nontenured faculty members who become pregnant should be allowed an extension of the appointment for one year for each pregnancy; and (7) the Special Committee on the Status of Women should be continued for another year. The North Texas State University's Women's Center was designed to define and identify the needs of women in the NTSU Community and to encourage and facilitate institutional and community response to those perceived needs. David T. Borland, consultant, advised the organizing group about the clientele who were to be served, the available resources for the center, and the scope of activities of the organization.
