Lee, Mary Dean; Meyer, Herbert H. (1978). Women in Traditionally Male Jobs: The Experiences of Ten Public Utility Companies. R & D Monograph 65. A study explored the results of programs designed to move women into traditionally male jobs (both managerial and blue collar) in ten public utility companies. The focus of the study was on the experiences of 164 women in such jobs and on the attitudes of their supervisors, male peers, and subordinates toward the companies' attempts to overcome job discrimination based on sex. The study also explored the impact of the women's new job patterns on their relationships with peers, parents, husbands, male friends, and children. The findings indicated that the experiences of the ten companies were considerably more positive than negative. Most of the women were seen to be performing well in their new jobs, although those in blue collar positions encountered more difficulties in the form of inadequate prior training and harassment from male peers. There was also considerable evidence that negative attitudes and expectations on the part of male supervisors and peers were likely to change… [PDF]

Brothers, Constance F.; Buchanan, E. T., III (1976). Mobility through Work Experience Education. Final Report. A project was conducted to provide women, minority, veteran, and handicapped college students with a structured cooperative education work experience which would enhance career selection and mobility and provide supervised employment in fields related to the students' interests and academic majors while supplying the employers with trained workers. Seventy-two students were placed in supervised work-training positions with fifty-three participating employers during the 1975-76 academic year. Both the students and employers involved in the project evaluated it positively. Placing handicapped and minority male students at work-training stations proved to be the most difficult task. One hundred seven responses to a questionnaire mailed to 234 community college cooperative education programs indicated that the programs most affected by the 1975-76 economic recession were in the east, south, and central areas of the country and that there was an improvement in the economy in the first…

Foster, Margaret E.; And Others (1975). Characteristics of Incoming Freshmen Commuter Students, 1973-75. Research Report #6-75. University Student Census (USC) data of incoming freshman commuters at the University of Maryland, College Park, for 1973, 1974 and 1975 are examined. The respective samples numbered 1467, 588, and 858 students who were enrolling for the Fall semester and who planned to live off-campus. The report is divided into three sections: (1) a composite description of the typical incoming freshman commuter for each of the three years; (2) a summary of trends or directions in four areas: demographic variables, attitudes and expectations toward the university, attitudes toward social issues, and commuter needs; and (3) a sketch of a hypothetical commuter of the future and a discussion of his/her anticipated needs. Results over the past three years show that there is an increase in concern over the economy as the most important issue for society to resolve; commuters are living closer to campus; fewer students are working; they report high school grade point averages of "B'"; more…

Weston, Kathleen M. (1982). The Apprenticeship and Blue Collar System. Putting Women on the Right Track. This guide provides a systems approach to increasing the numbers of women in apprenticeships and skilled blue collar jobs. Its components form the Apprenticeship and Blue Collar (ABC) System. This system was developed from the experiences of hundreds of employment and training professionals and from several targeted outreach programs currently assisting women to enter the trades. The chapters, each covering a single component, follow a typical woman's progress through the system, from the first step of outreach and recruitment, through orientation, individual counseling and tutorials, training, referral, job development, and follow-up. Throughout the chapters, advice is given to help employment counselors, women's advocates, and trades recruiters to recruit blue-collar women and conduct workshops and training sessions, with emphasis on overcoming sex stereotypic barriers to nontraditional occupations. A glossary and a list of resources are included in the publication. Appendixes…

(1982). Equal Employment Opportunity for Women: U.S. Policies. United States Report for the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Working Party Number 6 on the Role of Women in the Economy (Paris, France, June 1982). A study analyzed past and present United States initiatives for promoting equal employment opportunity and wage equality for women. It was determined that, during the past 20 years, the United States Government has established the legal procedures to combat inequities in educational opportunities and employment-related practices. While these procedures have effected some improvements, the problems of occupational segregation and its resultant lower earnings for women persist. Other issues affecting the full utilization of women in the work force include protective labor legislation, inequities in education, lack of adequate child care, lack of adequate alternative work patterns, the scope of unemployment, involuntary part-time employment, and limited unemployment assistance. Despite outreach efforts to groups with special needs, such as migrant and seasonal farmworkers and minority women, members of these groups continue to lag behind their white counterparts in most socioeconomic… [PDF]

Rist, Ray C. (1978). On the Education of Guestworker Children in Germany: A Comparative Study of Policies and Programs in Bavaria and Berlin. This paper examines two programs for the education of immigrant (guestworker) children in Germany. The Bavarian model bases its program upon the assumption that most foreign children remain in Germany for only a short time, eventually returning to their native countries. Evidence largely discredits this assumption, however. Though providing options for those foreign children who speak German, its primary emphasis is upon maintaining skills in the mother tongue. Immigrant children are given their own schools and are encouraged to stay there. By establishing this type of system, Bavaria is perpetuating the isolation and segregation of its minority population. Conversely, the Berlin (West) model is aimed at the integration of the children of the foreign worker as quickly as possible into the German language classroom. In contrast to the Bavarian program, the Berlin model tends to overemphasize integration. Cultural integration is so strong that no recognition of the national background… [PDF]

Henry, J. Marilyn; Taylor, Dalmas A. (1977). Ethnicity and Bicultural Considerations in Psychology: Meeting the Needs of Ethnic Minorities. This paper summarizes the history, philosophy, and recruitment methodology of the American Psychological Association (APA) Minority Fellowship Program. The aim of the program is participation by ethnic minorities in the development of psychology, both as a practicing art and as a science. The APA received a training grant to provide fellowship stipends to ethnic minority students eligible for or attending graduate programs leading to a Ph.D. in psychology. From 1974 through 1977, stipend awards were made to 115 students from 44 institutions. In most cases, student support was cost-shared by the institution. Evidence suggests that even though minority admission is increasing, there continues to be a need to modify existing standards for optimal success of the program. Special student recruitment efforts must be considered; modified interpretation or exclusion of GRE scores for other predictive information is desirable; a support system consisting of a critical mass of ethnic minority… [PDF]

The following issues are dealt with: (1) the ramifications of stereotypic thinking, of ethnic and racial prejudice, and of sexism; (2) the negative results of parental pressures on a child to excel; (3) the conflict between the child's need to explore beyond the family unit and the parents' natural protectiveness; (4) the embarrassment of feeling \different\; (5) apprehension about people from a different culture; and (6) how being open about thoughts and feelings can help others understand us. The following information is provided for each of the programs: (1) a synopsis; (2) the learning goals for the program; (3) questions for class discussion; (4) a suggestion for role-playing that can carry… [PDF]
